COMMERCIAL GAME SALES IN Q2 2022

According to the American Gaming Association's Commercial Gaming Earnings Tracker, national commercial gaming revenue totaled $14.81 billion in the second quarter of 2022. It beat Q4 2021 by 3.3%, setting a new industry quarter record.

2022 will set a new annual record for commercial gaming revenue for the second year in a row as the company generated $29.16 billion during the first half, up nearly 18% year over year.

AGA President and CEO Bill Miller said: "The second quarter results mark a 16-month gain for commercial gaming." "With increasingly challenging comparisons year after year, our strength through the first half of 2022 reflects not only the record popularity of games but also the continued consumer demand for legitimate options."

The industry's growth slowed throughout the second quarter, with monthly growth slowing from 13.1% in April to 10.7% in May and 2.5% in June, indicating a stabilization in consumer demand and a return to normal gaming operations a year ago.

Of the 31 commercial gaming jurisdictions operating during the same period last year, sales increased in the second quarter of 2022. Nine states - Arkansas, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon and Pennsylvania - hit quarterly highs.

Traditional casino games continued to drive industry success, with both offline slots and table games recording quarterly sales records. Slot machine sales rose 0.2% year-over-year, while table game sales surged 18.2%, indicating the ongoing impact of COVID-19 restrictions on table games in the first half of 2021. In the first half of this year, traditional casino games generated $23.67 billion in revenue, 11.7% more than in the first half of 2021.

The sports betting sector is also continuously growing. Consumer demand is up 58.7% from Q2 2021 with six new state market launches over the past year. So far in 2022, sports betting revenue of $3.04 billion is up 63.9% year over year.

Meanwhile, the six U.S. iGaming markets in operation generated $1.21 billion in the second quarter of 2022, edging past the previous record for the vertical line set in the first quarter of 2022. Adding one more market, commercial iGaming revenue of $2.42 billion generated in the year to June jumped 43.5% compared to the same period in 2021, the highest-grossing year on the vertical line.

"While we are on pace to set annual sales records, we are aware of the continued impact of inflation and labor issues and market concerns about a potential recession," Miller said. "Our members have demonstrated agility and resilience over the past two years and are well positioned to face these potential headwinds heading into the second half of the year."

AGA's Q2 2022 Commercial Gaming Revenue Report follows the National Indian Gaming Commission's announcement that tribal operators generated a record high of $39 billion in gaming revenue in 2021. 2021 combined with $53 billion in revenue from commercial games, it beat the previous record held in 2019 by 13%.

"Tribal games have shown responsible leadership throughout the pandemic and these record results reflect that commitment," Miller concluded. "The full recovery and continued success of tribal casinos supports vibrant communities across the country, well beyond the casino floor."
