Jeju Is Still Studying Online Games For Casinos: Gov
Casino destination Jeju is still mulling a "side dish" of seeking online gambling offerings through foreign-only bricks and mortar casinos as the semi-autonomous South Korean holiday island recovers from direct tourism losses amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is information from GGRAsia (photo) who visited the headquarters of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.
Jeju has its own regulatory rules for casinos since 2009. Jeju currently has eight licensed casinos, but five of them are now temporarily closed, coupled with the tourism downturn caused by the pandemic.
According to Alex Park, deputy manager of the Jeju Casino Policy Division, GGRAsia, Jeju's idea of "brick and mortar casinos," is "currently under review" to "provide remote gambling through the Internet to overseas customers," and any "leave" should be considered.
The Jeju government's department coordinates local casino regulations.
Last October, a member of the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee raised the possibility of allowing remote gambling at Korean casinos.
At a policy forum held by Jeju Island in November, many scholars in Korea suggested that online gambling services through Jeju bricks and mortar gamegrounds should be considered using payment methods, including blockchain.
Such a move will require approval from the national government. The country's leadership changed on May 10, when Yoon Suk Yeol was sworn in as South Korea's president, after an election in March
