While I understand that all sectors of the Quebec economy must share in the quite necessary budgetary constraints and that every sector will argue its priority importance as special case, I would like to believe that education and research are not being too severely affected. I accept contraction equivalent to average contractions on spending across the entire budget.

I also accept that we should be prepared to help Quebec's fiscal situation through increased income tax rates. We have to be responsible for what it is that we (I am not almost 70 years old and have lived in Quebec for 40 years.) have wrought. We have to start paying the bills for the services that we have created for ourselves. More than that, we have to plan to do this in the long term in a sustainable, no-growth way. We can't simply increase our load on the planet and our territory of the planet exponentially without running into an "ecological wall".
