Réformons Développement et Paix / Reform Development and Peace

Nous, catholiques et autres citoyens québécois de bonne volonté, reconnaissons le travail accompli par Développement et Paix au cours de sa quarantaine d'années d'existence. PAR CONTRE, nous sommes gravement inquiétés par des allégations qui nous semblent bien fondées voulant que Développement et Paix subventionne des organismes dans le tiers monde (au Mexique, en Amérique latine, en Afrique) qui font la promotion de l'avortement, de la contraception et d'idéologies allant à l'encontre de l'enseignement de l'Église. De plus, il nous semble que nous n'avons touché que la pointe de l'iceberg. Nous implorons donc les évêques du Canada à revoir de fond en comble le mandat et le fonctionnement de l'organisme D&P, pour que D&P accomplisse son travail de miséricorde et de justice auprès des pauvres en tenant compte de TOUT l'enseignement de l'Église, en particulier celui, millénaire, sur le caractère sacré de la vie humaine et de la procréation (c.f. les encycliques Caritas in veritate, Evangelium Vitae et Humanae Vitae).

We, Catholics and other Quebec citizens of good will, recognize the work done by Development and Peace throughout its forty-plus years of existence. HOWEVER, we are deeply troubled by claims which appear to us as being well founded stating that Development and Peace funds agencies in the developing world – in Mexico, Latin America, and Africa— that promote abortion, contraception, and ideologies that run counter to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Further, it seems to us that only the tip of the iceberg has been exposed. So, we implore the bishops of Canada to review from top to bottom the mandate and the organisation of D&P, so that D&P may accomplish its task of mercy and justice on behalf of the poor in light of ALL the teachings of the Church, particularly those concerned with the sacred character of human life and procreation – i.e., the encyclicals Caritas in veritate, Evangelium Vitae et Humanae Vitae.
