Hoi An, Vietnam, May Open In February To Jab Foreign Visitors

Hoi An, Vietnam (pictured), a city near Hoiana Casino Resort backed by Sun City Group Holdings, hopes to fully welcome tourists from countries where the risk of overseas transmission of the virus is low among foreign tourists vaccinated against COVID-19 by February next year.

The opening of Hoi An City will be part of maternal Quang Nam's efforts to boost the local economy through inbound foreign tourists, as part of a broader national-government opening effort.

Hoian's "vaccine passport" plan could start the fastest in February, according to a report by local media outlet VN Express.

Citing Quang Nam's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the report said it had drafted a "Phase 3" vaccine passport plan for people from regions or countries with high COVID-19 vaccination rates, including Europe, the United States, Northeast Asia, Australia and the Middle East. Arrivals from those areas will have to stay at designated resorts in Vietnam and book trips to designated travel agencies. There is a monthly cap on the number of visitors who have entered. If all goes well, the cap will gradually rise.

The first step in the vaccination passport program, which is scheduled to run from February to May 2022, will be for Quang Men to receive between 2,000 and 3,000 foreign visitors every month. According to VN Express, they will be allowed to visit several tourist attractions within the province, including "play facilities" in the old town of Hoian and the five-star resort.

By September 2022, the second phase will allow Quang Nam to attract "10,000 to 50,000" foreign tourists each month, after which they will be able to visit more destinations in the province and stay at three- and four-star resorts.

The report did not specify whether quarantine measures would be partially or completely waived for foreign tourists entering Guangzhou who are fully vaccinated.

Vietnam's National Tourism Agency said last week it was preparing for a "safe resumption of tourism" as the government decided to shift from a "zero COVID-19" approach to a "flexible" response to COVID-19.

Phu Quoc, a resort in southern Vietnam and currently the only casino resort that can accommodate local players, will also have pilot plans to allow foreigners. The Vietnamese government said in a statement on Oct. 7 that it will operate from November until March next year.
