China to review requests for international travel from Jan. 8

China's National Immigration Service said on Tuesday it would resume accepting and reviewing passport applications from mainland residents for "foreign tourism and visiting friends" from Jan. 8.

Many news outlets have since reported a surge in consumer searches, inquiries and booking requests on Chinese online travel sites, including ctrip.com .

Various casino resorts around the world, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, identified Chinese consumers as their primary target market in pre-pandemic times. But China has pushed for a policy of cracking down on so-called cross-border gambling in recent years, making it a crime to help mainland residents travel outside for that purpose.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese government has advised its citizens to refrain from non-essential international travel. Although there has been no official ban on such travel, some news outlets have reported that it has become more difficult for mainland residents to obtain a new passport once their existing one expires.

China's immigration authorities will "resume the processing of endorsements to allow mainland Chinese residents to visit the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for tourism and business purposes," the official Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday.

"Highways at ports adjacent to the Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions will return to normal operation," Xinhua also reported, citing the National Immigration Service.

Tuesday's announcement on the resumption of outbound travel permits and passport processing came after Monday's announcement that quarantine rules for travelers entering China from abroad would be repealed.
