China to re-designate mainland lottery online sales ban

Chinese authorities reiterated their continued ban on online ticket sales to China's official lottery system in an announcement on Tuesday that postponed Aug. 8.

The statement, released by China's finance ministry, has been approved by 11 other government departments. It noted that the ministry has so far not approved lottery vendors to make online sales.

Mainland authorities ordered the suspension of online sales of China's two official lottery tickets, the Welfare Lottery and the Sports Lottery, in 2015. This was because there was a need to simplify government supervision and curb fraud from unlicensed sellers. The central government said that the ban was temporary at the time but would be enforced until further notice.

"In recent years, relevant government departments have jointly revised online lottery sales that have not been approved several times. It has made a clear improvement in the lottery sales market," an announcement by the Chinese authorities said in a post on the ministry's website.

"However, unauthorized online lottery sales through internet platforms still happen from time to time, severely affecting the sound development of the Chinese lottery business," the authorities wrote. The Chinese government ministries, each responsible for overseeing banking, information technology, and public security, were among those who supported the statement.

The announcement also noted available sanctions against anyone found to be involved in the sale of online lottery tickets, including the closure of violating websites or a blacklist of lottery tickets within China.

The Chinese authorities' statement on online lottery sales came after mainland media reports that U.S. computer company Apple had removed as many as 25,000 lottery and gambling apps from its app stores in China. The removal of the apps came shortly after Chinese state broadcaster CCTV criticized Apple's app content policy on the mainland market on Sunday.
