Messieurs,
Ce que Venise couronne, le monde le tient pour vrai. Un Lion ouvre les salles de cinquante pays, les plateformes, les écoles. Cette autorité engage votre responsabilité.
Depuis 2020 au moins, votre programme Final Cut in Venice remercie officiellement le Doha Film Institute, organisme de l'État du Qatar, pays qui abrite la direction politique du Hamas. Douze films soutenus par cet institut à la Mostra en 2024, douze en 2025, huit en 2026. En 2025, La Voix de Hind Rajab, financé par Doha, remporte le Lion d'argent. En 2026, sa réalisatrice siège au jury qui décerne son Prix spécial à NAZA, film accusant Israël d'avoir planifié la mort de civils à Gaza.
Le prix obtenu, la suite a tenu du hold-up. En quelques semaines, NAZA a été lancé dans 56 pays, souvent pour deux ou trois jours seulement, avant d'être offert gratuitement en ligne par le Guardian, son producteur. Le label de Venise a servi de passe-partout à un film de propagande.
Ces récits sortent des salles. En France, les actes antisémites n'ont jamais été aussi nombreux en vingt-cinq ans que ces trois dernières années, selon le ministère de l'Intérieur. Washington, Manchester, Sydney, en 2025, ont compté leurs morts. Un film ne tue pas. Consacré par Venise, il désigne.
D'autres institutions ont su réagir. En 2022, après l'exposition d'œuvres antisémites à documenta, Kassel a confié l'enquête à des experts indépendants puis adopté un code de conduite. En 2024, après des discours tenus lors de la clôture de la Berlinale, le gouvernement allemand a ouvert une enquête sur le festival. En 2025, le festival de Toronto a réintégré, avec des excuses publiques, un documentaire sur le 7 octobre qu'il avait écarté.
Nous demandons à La Biennale, institution publique, de faire preuve de la même exigence avant la 84e Mostra.
Adopter un code de déontologie fondé sur la définition de l'antisémitisme de l'IHRA, que l'Italie a reprise en 2020.
Créer un conseil consultatif indépendant, que le public puisse saisir.
Rendre publiques les déclarations d'indépendance des jurés, exigées par la FIAPF, en les étendant aux financeurs des films en compétition.
Publier chaque année la liste des partenaires institutionnels de la Mostra et la nature de leur contribution.
Examiner les films consacrés au 7 octobre selon les mêmes critères que tous les autres.
Nous ne demandons l'exclusion d'aucune œuvre. Nous demandons que Venise reste au-dessus de tout soupçon.
Cette pétition restera ouverte jusqu'à l'ouverture de la 84e Mostra.

AFTER THE NAZA SCANDAL, WE CALL ON THE VENICE FILM FESTIVAL TO GUARANTEE ITS INDEPENDENCE AND FAIRNESS

Dear Sirs,
What Venice crowns, the world holds to be true. A Lion opens cinemas in fifty countries, streaming platforms, schools. That authority carries responsibility.
Since at least 2020, your Final Cut in Venice programme has officially thanked the Doha Film Institute, an institution of the State of Qatar, the country that hosts Hamas's political leadership. Twelve films supported by this institute screened at the festival in 2024, twelve in 2025, eight in 2026. In 2025, The Voice of Hind Rajab, funded by Doha, won the Silver Lion. In 2026, its director sat on the jury that awarded its Special Prize to NAZA, a film accusing Israel of planning the killing of civilians in Gaza.
Once the prize was won, what followed was a hold-up. Within weeks, NAZA was launched in 56 countries, often for only two or three days, before being offered free online by The Guardian, its producer. The Venice label served as a master key for a propaganda film.
These narratives do not stay in cinemas. In France, antisemitic acts have never been so numerous in twenty-five years as over the past three, according to the Ministry of the Interior. Washington, Manchester and Sydney counted their dead in 2025. A film does not kill. Consecrated by Venice, it points the finger.
Other institutions have responded. In 2022, after antisemitic works were exhibited at documenta, Kassel entrusted the inquiry to independent experts and then adopted a code of conduct. In 2024, after speeches at the Berlinale closing ceremony, the German government opened an inquiry into the festival. In 2025, the Toronto International Film Festival reinstated, with a public apology, a documentary about October 7 that it had dropped.
We ask La Biennale, a public institution, to show the same rigour before the 84th edition.
Adopt a code of ethics based on the IHRA definition of antisemitism, endorsed by Italy in 2020.
Create an independent advisory board that members of the public can refer matters to.
Publish the jurors' declarations of independence, already required by FIAPF rules, and extend them to the funders of competing films.
Publish each year the list of the festival's institutional partners and the nature of their contribution.
Assess films about October 7 by the same criteria as all others.
We are not asking for any work to be excluded. We ask that Venice remain above suspicion.
This petition will remain open until the opening of the 84th Venice Film Festival.

Almeno dal 2020, il vostro programma Final Cut in Venice ringrazia ufficialmente il Doha Film Institute, ente dello Stato del Qatar, Paese che ospita la direzione politica di Hamas. Dodici film sostenuti da questo istituto alla Mostra nel 2024, dodici nel 2025, otto nel 2026. Nel 2025, La voce di Hind Rajab, finanziato da Doha, vince il Leone d'argento. Istituire un comitato consultivo indipendente, al quale il pubblico possa rivolgersi.
Rendere pubbliche le dichiarazioni di indipendenza dei giurati, già richieste dalle regole della FIAPF, estendendole ai finanziatori dei film in concorso.
Pubblicare ogni anno l'elenco dei partner istituzionali della Mostra e la natura del loro contributo.
Esaminare i film dedicati al 7 ottobre secondo gli stessi criteri di tutti gli altri.
Non chiediamo l'esclusione di alcuna opera. Chiediamo che Venezia resti al di sopra di ogni sospetto.
Questa petizione resterà aperta fino all'apertura dell'84ª Mostra.
